The Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, governs Christian marriages in India. It outlines the legal requirements, procedures, and authorities responsible for solemnizing and registering Christian marriages in the country.

Key Provisions of the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872

  1. The Act applies to all Christian communities in India (subject to conditions set by the Indian Government).
  2. It covers marriages between two Christians or a Christian and a non-Christian (under specific conditions).
  3. Inter-caste marriages can also be performed under the AIIC Diocese in India and abroad.
  • The minimum age for marriage is:
    • 21 years for the groom

18 years for the bride

Christian marriages in India can be legally solemnized by:

  • Ordained Pastors or Priests – Clergy or clergywomen authorized by their church.
  • Marriage Registrars – Officials appointed under the Act.
  • Special License Holders – Individuals authorized by the government (subject to conditions set by the Indian Government).
  • For civil marriages, couples must provide written notice to the Marriage Registrar at least 30 days before the wedding.
  • Church marriages follow their respective traditions but must comply with legal procedures.
  1. After the marriage, a Marriage Certificate is issued by the church or registrar.
  2. The marriage must be officially registered with the government to be legally valid.
  • If a Christian wants to marry a non-Christian, the marriage must be registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, unless the non-Christian converts to Christianity before the marriage.

A Christian marriage is legally valid if: It is solemnized by a recognized authority (church or registrar). Both parties voluntarily consent to the marriage. The age requirements are met. The marriage is properly registered.

  1. Application: Independent pastors apply for authorization from AIIC Diocese.
  2. Verification: AIIC Diocese verifies the pastor’s credentials and ministry background.
  3. Training: Pastors undergo training on legal and biblical marriage procedures.
  4. Licensing: AIIC Diocese issues a license, officially authorizing the pastor to conduct Christian and inter-caste marriages in India.
  5. Registration: Marriages performed under AIIC Diocese’s authorization are legally registered with government authorities.
  • Baptism certificate from the concerned church
  • Pastor’s credentials (ordination certificate, ID proof, etc.)
  • Ministry details (church affiliation, address, etc.)
  • Completed application form issued by AIIC Diocese
  • Declaration of adherence to Christian Marriage Act and AIIC
  • Aadhar Card
  • PAN Card
  • Voter ID Card or Driving License
  • Educational qualification certificates
  • Church picture with the pastor/clergyman standing in front of the church board
  • Twenty passport-size photos
  • Testimony (not less than five pages) of the concerned pastor
  • Biblical examination (mandatory)
  • Nominal fees for application processing, training, and licensing.
  • License renewal is required periodically, with updates on credentials and compulsory training every year.

By providing Christian Marriage Authorization, AIIC Diocese empowers unorganized pastors, clergymen, and clergywomen to perform legally and spiritually recognized marriages.
